Experimentation

How are experiments central to ecology?
Science attempts to provide the best possible picture of what is going on behind the phenomena. It describes the unseen components of the problem. Theories are the accounts of the underlying composition or unseen causes; they speak about things beyond the evidence.

Trophic Cascades

Trophic Cascades
A trophic cascade is a progression of indirect effects from predators across successively lower trophic levels (See Estes Estes, Crooks, Holt, 2001. Predators, ecological role of. Levin S, ed. Encyclopedia of Biodiversity, vol. 4. San Diego) the top down processes and other trophic interactions have broad ecosystem effects.

Arthropods in Dougfir and Alder Stands

Question: Are populations of arthropods associated with these habitat types: Douglas Fir and Red Alder near Lookout Creek, and Douglas fir upland from the creek. Are they statistically similar, or are they different?

Species Diversity near Clear-cuts

Question: Do clear-cuts have adverse effects on the diversity of species that hatch in streams?

Study design: The study site was “Two Girls Peak” area within Willamette National Forest. Three first order streams with the same altitude and slope were chosen. One was in a clear cut (CC), one was in an area that had been logged but with a riparian buffer zone (BUF), and the third was in an unlogged forested area (FOR). Five emergent traps, each set 5 m apart, were set into each stream directly over the water. They were all left for the same two week period during July 2005, and then collected.
